- Hold the mala: Grasp the mala beads in your right hand, with the guru bead or pendant facing you.
- Start with a prayer: Say a prayer or mantra to dedicate your practice and set a positive tone.
- Focus on your breath: Close your eyes and bring attention to your breath, feeling the sensation of the air entering and leaving your nostrils.
- Begin counting: Move the first bead with your thumb and middle finger*, reciting your chosen mantra or focusing on your breath.
